Planning a zaffa in Dubai

The zaffa — also written zaffeh or zaffe — is the procession that brings the couple into their wedding celebration with drums, singing and applause. For many Arab families it is the moment the party truly begins. Here is what a zaffa involves, the main styles you will see at weddings in the UAE, and how to plan one.

What happens in a zaffa

Musicians lead the couple from the entrance to their seats or stage, drumming and singing traditional wedding songs while guests clap, ululate and film. It is short — long enough to carry the couple through the room — but it sets the energy for the whole night.

The main styles

  • Lebanese and Levantine zaffa — energetic drumming with tabl and darbuka, traditional wedding songs, and often dabke dancers. Some troupes add swords, torches or costumes.
  • Egyptian zaffa — musicians with drums, tambourines and traditional songs, sometimes with candles carried in the procession and a dancer.
  • Gulf and Emirati — traditional drummers and singers with large frame drums, in traditional dress. Powerful, rhythmic and unmistakably local — see our traditional Arabic band.

Families often blend elements, so start from the style that feels like home and tell us what you would like to add.

Where the zaffa fits in the evening

Most often it is the couple’s grand entrance into the reception. Some families also use a zaffa to accompany the groom, or as a second entrance after the couple changes outfits. Agree the moment with your venue and planner so the lights, doors and photographer are ready.

After the zaffa

The procession hands over to the music for the rest of the night: an Arabic band with a singer for tarab and dabke, an Arabic singer with backing, or a DJ. For ladies-only receptions, a female Arabic singer with female musicians keeps the celebration going.

Planning checklist

  • Choose the style — Levantine, Egyptian, Gulf or a blend
  • Decide the route: from which door to which seat or stage
  • Confirm timing with the venue, the planner and the photographer
  • Check with the venue about any limits on drums, open flames or props such as swords and torches
  • Tell us the dress code — traditional costume is usual
  • Plan what follows: band, singer or DJ

Questions, answered

How long does a zaffa last?

Usually just long enough to bring the couple through the room to their seats — a short, high-energy moment rather than a full performance set.

Is it spelled zaffa, zaffeh or zaffe?

All three are used. They are different transliterations of the same Arabic word for the wedding procession.

Can a zaffa be held at a ladies-only reception?

Yes, with female performers. Tell us it is a ladies-only event and we will plan the line-up accordingly.
