Music for UAE National Day
Every 2 December the UAE celebrates the day the Emirates came together in 1971. Officially called Eid Al Etihad — the Union Day — it is a time of flags, family gatherings, office celebrations and heritage events across the country, and 2026 marks the 55th year of the union. The music should feel proudly Emirati. Here is how to plan it.

Traditional performances
Nothing says National Day like the heritage arts of the Emirates:
- Al Ayyala — two rows of men with bamboo canes moving to drums and chanted poetry; recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of the UAE and Oman
- Traditional Khaleeji drummers and singers — large frame drums and voices, ideal as a welcome or procession
- Oud and qanun — a refined sound for receptions, majlis settings and dinners
Celebrations and parties
For the celebration itself, an Arabic singer performing Emirati and Khaleeji national songs leads guests in the music everyone knows. For ladies-only gatherings, a female Arabic singer with female musicians is a favourite. Later in the evening a DJ can mix national songs with Arabic and international hits.
Corporate and office events
Many companies mark Eid Al Etihad with a celebration for staff and clients. A short ayyala or drum performance as a welcome, followed by oud and qanun during a reception, sets a festive but respectful tone. Keep the programme short and centred on the national heritage.
Hotels, malls and public spaces
For venues welcoming large crowds over the National Day holiday, roaming traditional drummers and scheduled ayyala performances give visitors a reason to gather and film. Plan set times around peak footfall.
