String quartet, trio or solo?
Strings are the most requested sound for weddings and formal events in the UAE. But “strings” can mean a single violin or a full quartet — and the right choice depends on the room, the number of guests and the moment. Here is how to decide.

Solo violin or cello
A solo violinist or cellist is intimate and flexible. It suits ceremonies, small dinners and receptions, and a violinist can roam between guests. The violin is bright and melodic; the cello is deeper and warmer. With backing tracks, a soloist can sound fuller for larger spaces.
Duo
A violin and cello, or violin and piano, gives you melody and harmony together — a noticeably richer sound with little extra space. It is the most popular choice for wedding ceremonies and dinners of up to a few hundred guests.
Trio
Adding a viola or second violin fills out the middle of the sound. A trio suits larger receptions and formal dinners, and handles classical repertoire with more depth than a duo.
String quartet
Two violins, viola and cello — the classic ensemble. A quartet has real presence in a ballroom, plays the full classical repertoire and pop arrangements, and looks magnificent. For gala openings and show moments, an electric string quartet plays amplified pop and rock anthems with choreography.
Harp
A harpist is a beautiful alternative or addition: calm, elegant and very visual, perfect for ceremonies, afternoon teas and luxury brand events.
How to choose
- Small room, up to around 60 guests — solo or duo
- Ceremony — solo, duo or harp; a quartet for a grand setting
- Dinner for a few hundred guests — duo or trio
- Ballroom or gala — quartet, acoustic or electric
- Party or launch — electric violin or electric quartet over a DJ

Practical notes for the UAE
- Strings are sensitive to heat and humidity — outdoors, choose shade and evening slots
- Each player needs a chair without arms and space to bow
- Larger rooms need light amplification, even for acoustic ensembles
- For ladies-only events, all-female ensembles are available
Questions, answered
Is a string quartet too much for a small wedding?
Not necessarily, but a duo usually fits better in small rooms. Quartets shine in larger venues and formal settings.
Can a string quartet play pop songs?
Yes — quartets play arrangements of pop songs as well as classical repertoire, and electric quartets specialise in modern hits.
Can strings play outdoors in Dubai?
Yes, in shade and ideally in the evening or the cooler months; heat and humidity affect the instruments.
